“Your lips will run red with lipgloss before this summer is over,” the old scout said.

A central tenet of 1990s makeup application held that eyes and lips should never be emphasized at the same time; that you must choose one to exaggerate and one to downplay.

Since my lips are the small and curly type that don’t look good in lipstick, I chose to emphasize my eyes when I began wearing makeup, and I have stuck with the choice ever since. Lip gloss, therefore, is not something that I normally wear, though it is dependably attractive (like all shiny things) when I encounter it on other women.

Here is what might be an exception: a lip gloss that comes in a glass tube and makes my lips look like the red pleather bustier of a Halloween “sexy devil” costume. It also has the advantage of being infused with spearmint, which feels helpful. Energizing? Possibly. Certainly tasty, which is nice because I do eat a lot of lip gloss when it’s on my mouth.

Two Mollys that use the same lip gloss. Marakele’s MintGloss is the best. If you enter the code “Fall09” when you’re checking out your order, you’ll get free shipping. Spend more than 50 buckaroos and you get the cherry hue for free.
